Philosophy
Image is important, and no one knows that more than us. A sign is an extension of you and your business. It represents who you are and what you stand for, an investment that can speak for your company for years to come. That is why we take such great care in every step of your sign's creation, from beginning to end. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and use only the best materials. You can be confident that when we reveal your image to the public, it will be an artful presentation that embodies all the principles of your business.
History
In the eastern shadows of the grandest of all railway stations, the Forrest Sign Company was born. Located at 166 West 30th Street, The Forrest Sign Company was founded by Mr. Frederick Forrest in 1938. This small firm flourished in pre-war New York, fabricating a myriad of hand painted, gilded and carved signs of all sizes and colors. All types of signs, all done by hand, for all types of clients: doctors, dentists, lawyers, furriers, the dress trade, entertainers, shop owners, and everybody else.
By 1962, the Forrest Sign Company employed twenty people - sign painters, gold leaf letterers, shop foremen, sign installers, salesmen and secretaries. Mr. Forrest, by now rather toned down from his earlier days, decided to sell out his interests to three colleagues, Sol Schlockman, David Sher and Dave Brandeis. These three industrious gentlemen consolidated their business talents and became the Forrest Sign Company, a Division of Dasherman, Inc. (Dasherman being an acronym of their first and last names).
The company thrived and grew for twelve years under the professional talents of these three men. By 1973 Sol Schlockman and Dave Brandies longed for retirement and they sold out their shares to David Sher. Still employing twelve employees, business continued to prosper and Richard McGovern was hired to handle the overflow of sales calls. David Sher continued to run the company until losing his five-year battle with Leukemia in 1979. At this point, Richard McGovern became the sole owner of The Forrest Sign Company, Division of Dasherman, Inc., and has continued to guide the success of this business for over twenty-nine years.
Today of course, Forrest Sign Company is no longer the company it was in 1938 or 1962. In place of hand painted signs we have digital computer generated graphics and vinyl. Instead of gilded and carved signs we have fabricated and water-jet cut letters. We are on the cutting edge of technology with the finest materials and finishes, but we are still serving all the same people... and more.
The original tagline for The Forrest Sign Company was: "Covering the entire field." While our techniques have changed, our capabilities have not. Whatever you need, we can do.
